Writer and spoken word artist Rowena shares ‘Baby Blues’, one of two of her spoken word pieces in a series, with this one containing themes of postpartum depression.
I curse the person who coined the term ‘baby blues’,
‘Til I’m baby-blue in the face.
A cute little phrase for the cute little women
Who grieve for no one’s death.
Bless her, she must have baby blues!
Fetch a tissue and a biscuit, that’ll do.
Soothe baby blues with a slice of cake –
It’s only hormones, baby blues.
Such a dismissive, patronising term
For the relentless ache
Of feeling like someone’s died
Combined with the ironic guilt
Of being very much aware
That someone’s just been born.
