One thing we’ve learnt is that 2019 was the year of the Slags, what started as a small idea between two people during office small talk, turned into a whole movement in Birmingham and beyond.
Since launching in March, Slag Mag has gone from strength to strength, including more than just serious ladies. Our last event in November on International Men’s Day was a huge success thanks to you. We opened our door to be more inclusive of LGBT+ musicians and artists, we challenged toxic masculinity and we all raised £150 for CALMZone all whilst having a huge party!
But we weren’t ready to wrap things up in November. We wanted to end the year with one more issue, and another excuse to party! You know what that means… On Wednesday, December 18th we’re back at Hare and Hounds!
Our last zine launch of the year is almost here, and we’re going out with a right Christmas cracker! First things first, we’ve got Pretty Grim headlining the night. This elusive trio are a supergroup of sorts, bringing Anna Palma of Dorcha, Kaila Whyte of Youth Man and Meesha Fones to create an infectious riot of punk. Compelling and sonically gripping, this trio are quiet and un assuming (you won’t find them on social media) but pack more than a punch on stage.
Also on the bill is one of Slag Mag’s new favourites Billy Nomates. Counting people like Sleaford Mods and IDLES are part of her fanbase, Billy Nomates is a one woman tour de force, biting back with quick wit lyrics and a devil-may-care attitude. This is one name you’ll be seeing and hearing all over in 2020, and you can catch here first!
Last but not least on the music front are KWALIA. A blend of funk, soul and R&B, this group are ready to impress with their brand new material.
It wouldn’t be a Slag Mag event without art, which is why we’re pleased to welcome Barbara Nice and her festive grotto. Kings Heath born and bred, Barbara is the comedy creation of Janice Connolly, (Phoenix Nights, Coronation Street), shooting her character into the spotlight after a successful stint on Britain’s Got Talent. Be sure to head down to our launch party early to visit her grotto for live stand up comedy.
As always, we’ll feature as much art as possible – with Emily Doyle showcasing her new zine Diary of a Drag King, along with prints by Reenie Dogface and many more!
Tickets to the Slag Mag Issue 3 Launch and Christmas Party on Wednesday, December 18th are available now and include a copy of Issue 3 Zine.
